Betty,

This is significant because for the first time we have a documentable source for the oft-repeated assertion that Joseph's middle initial was C. It is likely not Crittenden as that was the name of a well-known politician of the 1800s, who ran for president and then for vice-president.

Subject: from betty baird in ky. about joseph and hannah baird

I finally got into my box of information i had copied a few months ago at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, KY. concerning any info on Joseph Baird who married Hannah Lay in Nov. 27, 1794 in Wilkes County, N.C. I was searching Buncombe County Deed Index Books there and copied some recorded transactions of 1820-1850's in Buncombe and saw a man James M. Smith who was racking up buying land in that area like crazy. He has pages and pages of land he bought , big parcels. Anyway, i noticed he acquired land 1834 the date/months were unreadable to list i guess because ? marks are listed but it was originally owned by Joseph C. Baird and Hannah Baird. the book number on these transactions are book 19 page 279 in the Buncombe County Deed Index book. I thought this was exciting if this is our joseph that he is listed as Joseph "C".
I know there was another Joseph Baird in the late 1790's in North Carolina that was a German immigrant that does not match up with our joseph but i don't think he married a Hannah, right??? .
