Janice,
Two descendants of the John Baird that came to NJ from Scotland in 1683 are
in the Baird DNA Project Data on www.bairddna.com. They are identified as
Donors #6 and #18, and their oldest known ancestor is shown as John Baird b. abt.
1600 Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland. They are in Haplogroup R1a and have
identical 12 marker haplotypes. The donors are anonymous since they have not
given permission to post their names and e-mail addresses.
You are right about the donor having to be a direct male descendent of a
Baird, Beard, etc. Your brother or a son of your brother would be a good
candidate assuming their surname is Baird/Beard. The donor could also be your father
(if living), your father's brother or his sons, grandsons, which are your
Baird first cousins. The same is true for Baird male cousins of higher degree.
Yes, the test is done with a swab in the mouth. Cost is $99 + $2 shipping.

Hi Fred,
Just wondering if there are any descendants of John Baird that came to NJ
from Scotland in 1683 in the DNA database.
Also, wanted to confirm that I have the right understanding of how the DNA
testing works...my understanding is that it has to be a direct male
descendant...in other words, it would have to be my brother or a son of my
brother for me to see which Baird/Beard line we connect with? Is the test
done with a swab in the mouth? I've seen the cost on this site before, but
can't remember what it is.
Thanks for all the work and sharing you do.
Janice
