I am seeking the proof that Sarah BALDWIN who married Treat SPEES was the
daughter of Theophilus BALDWIN.
Additionally, I would like to know who else is searching the SPEES line and
who the siblings are for my various SPEES ancestors.
In 1762 in Amenia, NT, Benjamin SPEES married Jane TREAT of Milford, CT.
However, no one has found the parents of Benjamin SPEES, b. 1740. Any
leads??
Their son Treat SPEES married Sarah BALDWIN, 7 Sep 1793, in Greenville, NY, a
town founded by Benjamin SPEES and others. In the Revised Baldwin Genealogy,
Sarah is listed as a probable twin to Anor, b. 1777. No other sisters are
listed, but here are her brothers: Anor, 1777; Truman, 1778; Theophilus,
1780; Jared, 1782; Eli, no date; and Cyrus, 1787. I have very old DAR
applications that include descendants of her younger brothers and her, so
perhaps they moved with her or near her. However, due to the age of the
applications, further proof of her parentage is needed. In any case, I want
to know her parentage. Any other leads?
The only child I know of is the one from whom I descend: Frederick Treat
SPEES, b. 14 Mar 1800. Likely there were more children. Are there any
descendants out there?
Frederick Treat SPEES married Jane SKILLMAN, b. Long Island in 1804, in 1824
her parents moved to Chenango Co, NY. They had at least children: Frederick
Benjamin SPEES, b. 3 May 1830 in Mt Morris, Chenango Co (his handwriting on
Oberlin College Alumni information sheet); currently it appears Mt Morris is
in Livingston Co; and Marcus Treat SPEES, who had at least one daughter,
Alice Minerva SPEES LANHAM.
Frederick Benjamin SPEES married 1) Maria MERRIFIELD, who died of typhoid
fever in 1859. Then he married 2) Abbie (Abigail A.) TAFT of Ohio in 1862.
They moved on to Tabor, IA, where they are buried. They spent their latter
years in Weeping Water, Nebraska, living with their daughter (my grandmother)
Lora Gertrude SPEES DUNN.
I would appreciate leads, clues, details, and answers.
Thanks.
Judy Dunn
