Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 16:22:20 EST

I am researching Jesse Baldwin that moved from Connecticut / New Jersey to
Richmond County, North Carolina in the late 1700s. Jesse was born in 1768
and died March 27, 1826. Jesse married Elizabeth Stringfellow in 1787.
Elizabeth was born 1766 and died 1841. Elizabeth was the daughter of William
and Rebecca Stringfellow. The children of Jesse and Elizabeth were:

Anna Jane Baldwin 11/23/1789 - 10/1841 married William Coppedge Capel 1782 -
7/23/1872

Diza, "Dicie" or "Disie" Baldwin 5/27/1791 - ??? married Nathan Jones 1782 -
9/13/1844

Dudley Malcom Baldwin, Sr. 1/30/1793 - 3/27/1872 married 3/26/1818 Rebecca
Roper 2/24/1803 - 1/15/1890

Alfred Baldwin 6/9/1796 - 8/19/1869 married 10/28/1824 (1) Jane Covington
10/14/1809 - 4/17/1861
*2nd Wife of Alfred Baldwin: Clemintine Everett

Hiram Baldwin, Sr. 2/23/1798 - 12/2/1882 married Elizabeth Baldwin (cousin)
4/8/1806 - 3/25/1872

William Baldwin 10/24/1802 - 1835 married Patience Smith. Patience later
remarried J.N. Bradley

Moses Baldwin 6/5/1803 - 1835 married 12/14/1826 Eliza Wooley 1805 - 1835

Jesse's ancestors are: Levi Ballard Baldwin 1740-1797, Zachariah Baldwin III
1709-1755, Zachariah Baldwin II 1680-1766, Zachariah Baldwin I 1660-1722,
Richard Baldwin 1622-1665 who was born in England, and Sylvester Baldwin born
about 1595 - died in 1638 on the ship "Martin" on his way to America.

Jesse settled in Richmond County on Big Mountain Creek near the present town
of Ellerbe Springs. Ellerbe Springs is about 10 miles north of Rockingham
(about 80 miles east of Charlotte and 90 miles south west of Raleigh).
Starting in Ellerbe Springs at highway 220, take highway 73 northwest about 3
to 4 miles to where it crosses Big Mountain Creek. Jesse Baldwin owned land
on both sides of Big Mountain Creek and is buried about one mile south of
highway 73.

Original copies of Jesse's land grants and his will are stored in the North
Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. The best information on Jesse Baldwin is
the book "Descendents of Jesse Baldwin of Richmond County, North Carolina and
Baldwin Family History in New Jersey and Connecticut compiled by Martha
Virginia Horne". I believe this book was originally published by the
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1977 (North
Carolina DAR GRC report; s1 v415).

Jesse and his descendents owned thousands of acres of land in Northern
Richmond County and Southern Montgomery County. The land was just south of
the Uwharrie National Forest and is beautiful rolling hills. They had many
slaves and were very prosperous. Unfortunately, the Civil War wiped them
out.

Many other researchers have added to, and corrected the wonderful information
compiled by Martha Virginia Horne. I have been trying to collect items
(wills, land grants, pictures, books, gravesite info, etc) related to
descendents of Jesse Baldwin so that they can be scanned into a computer and
transferred to CD-ROM for permanent storage.

I would appreciate anyone with additional information, or who wants more
information, to contact me.

Thanks

Keith Baldwin
