Hi-
Most Baldwin branches I'm familiar with started in New York or New Jersey
(or Delaware) and traveled down to other areas, probably by the Ohio River,
which was a highway back then.
My line - I am descended from FIELDING Baldwin (b. about 1810), who
married PRISCILLA Estep in Pike COunty, Ky, and settled IN logan COunty, WV.
His father (according to list of Hiram's children) was HIRAM Baldwin who
lived in Warren County, Ohio. Hiram was one of many children of FRANCIS and
RHODA (JENNINGS) Baldwin, who also lived in Warren County Ohio, but traveled
probably down the OHIO RIVER from WILLIAM Baldwin's home in what is now the
Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia-or Berkeley County, WV (then Virginia).
FRANCIS was, too. traveled to a child's home to New Orleans, and later died
while there.
Bedore Berkely County, the stop-off point seemed to be
Pennsylvania: I believe Chester County, Pennsylvania. Before that, they
came from Delaware and before that New Jersey. Another branch came through
New York.
While some Baldwins migrated to Ohio, some went to Kentucky, some down to
North Carolina, etc.
Names: JAMES is a Baldwin family name. My gr-grandfather WILLIAM
BALDWIN's brother was named JAMES, and my own brother is named JAMES.
CHARLES is also a Baldwin family name-my grandfather GEORGE I. Baldwin's
brother was named CHARLEY Baldwin. The Baldwins seemed to name children
after ancestors, hopefully in honor, which points to a family/cultural
tradition.
Good luck with your serach! My search has taken me 20+ years to figure
out the migration information for my line. Genealogy research involves not
just acculmulating names and dates, but looking at family traditions, naming
patterns (lingusitic anthrology), migrations, etc.
