G'day Cobbers,

I'm researching my BALDWIN ancestry and have the following.

William James BALDWIN arrived in NZ, in 1851, as a bachelor and married
Louisa INCH in New Plymouth, NZ, on the 20th Mar 1853.

All of WJB's children's were born & died in NZ:

Amelia BALDWINb. 9 Dec 1853 d. 18 Oct 1912
Ellen Philippa BALDWIN b. 12 Oct 1855 d. 11 May 1933
Louisa Elizabeth BALDWIN b. 1 Jul 1857 d. 24 Sept 1933
Emma BALDWINb. 26 Jul 1859 d. 5 Oct 1929
Thomas William BALDWINb. 7 Feb 1862 d. 13 Mar 1935
Mary Alice BALDWIN b. 4 Jun 1864
Edmund Alfred BALDWIN b. 6 Jun 1866 d. 21 Jan 1887

I'm really trying to connect with my English ancestry, hence the list of
New Zealand born children.

William James BALDWIN's father is given as James BALDWIN on his death
certificate. WJB's death certificate also shows his date of birth as 1818 in
Grennage (=Greenwich), Kent, England.

The family, according to family folklore, was meant to be involved in
religion, James BALDWIN being a minister or lay preacher. Other members of
the family maintain that James BALDWIN was an agricultural labourer. Which
is correct, I don't know.

My grandfather, Alan BALDWIN DCM, descendant from Thomas William BALDWIN,
above, served with the 2/14 Australian Light Horse, at Gallipoli and in
Eygpt, during WW1, told a story of how he fought at Gallipoli with a cousin
in the British Army, who was killed.

The alleged cousin was Brigadier-General Anthony Hugh Baldwin, 38th Infantry
Brigade, who born in September 1863, at Stratford-on-Avon and educated at
Clitheroe Grammar School and Giggleswick. Baldwin was commissioned into the
1st Battalion, The Manchester Regiment, from the Militia, in May 1884. He
served in India from 1888 to 1895 and saw his first active service in the
Miranzi Expedition of 1891. He served in the South African War in 1902 as
Adjutant to the 6th Battalion, The Manchester Regiment. In 1910 he returned
to India and retired on half-pay in June 1914.

At the outbreak of the Great War he offered his services and was given
command of the 38th Infantry Brigade, which he trained and took to Gallipoli
in June 1915. On 9 August 1915, Baldwin led his brigade in an attack on
Chunuk Bair, and was killed in this action.

Given the above, is there anybody out there able to help me with my BALDWIN
genealogy, my brick wall.

Regards

Greg Baldwin
