I am interested in any information anyone may have about the George Payne
who married Elizabeth Smith, widow, on 25 April 1772 in St. Pauls Parish in
Baltimore County.. My ancestor is a Bennett Payne who is supposed to have
been born in Virginia on 2 May 1777. I have been told that his parents were
a George and Elizabeth Payne. The Bennett name does not seem to occur in
the Payne families prior to this Bennett. So I am assuming that he may have
been named for a friend of the family or a Payne that married a Bennett. I
recently learned that the Paynes and Bennett families appear together in
Maryland. Family stories also said that Bennett was originally Benedict
and that the family was Catholic. Any help or assistance in where to look
further would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
