Sam,
Thanks for the details about your Mettams. You should be able to find your
ancestor relatively easily in the 1900 census because there is a Soundex
Index for all the states in that census. If he was born in 1898, he probably
is in the MD ssection with his parents. The Soundex itself will give you
some details but it will direct you to the MD Census roll and page with the
full census data for your folks. As you see, it's a two step process, but
usually worth it.
