Hi all,

The BANAT list has moved and has come back to life.

The following is a BRIEF new Welcome message and explains the new list.

Please post all message to the LIST at

To UNSUB follow the instructions below.

*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* WELCOME to the BANAT LIST *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*
My name is Chris Lamesfield. I'm the "moderator/owner" of this list.
That means I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as
possible and setting some rules for its operation.

The Banat mailing list is an informal group of people who are researching
family links in portions of the former Habsburg Empire, commonly referred to
as Austria-Hungary. As this list is primarily interested in Donauschwaben
(German-speaking) genealogy, most geographical and personal names will be
listed in either or both the common English or German nomenclature. Often,
when the common English name is used, the German name will follow in
parentheses.
Hungarian and Serbo-Croatian names are discussed in separate sections.

In case you cannot reach the list owner/moderator Chris Lamesfield
you may contact this list backup moderator
(Richard Heli) or (Bob Madler).

"All rights including Copyrights to the messages sent to this LIST for
distribution to its subscribers remain with the original author of each
message. No part of these messages nor the archives file containing them
may be published or redistributed in any form by a "FOR PROFIT" or
commercial organization. All publication requires the permission of each
message author".

$%$%$%$ Your responsibilities $%$%$%$

That's right, you have some responsibilities, too.

A mail list isn't like a movie, where you just buy a ticket, get entertained
(sometimes) then walk away. This is a cooperative effort.

1. Keep this message. I recommend printing it and putting the paper
where you can find it. Files on a hard disk get lost (as if paper
doesn't, but...)

2. Read this message. Yes, it's a little long, but you don't have to
memorize it (that's why you're saving it). It's hard to make it
short and tell you what you need to know.

3. Don't be afraid of all this. Using a computer is a little harder than
just knowing where the power switch is, but anyone can do this with
a little effort and by following instructions.

4. Follow instructions - to the letter. If you leave something out of a
command or put something extra in, it probably won't work.

5. If you decide to leave the list, make sure your name is removed (more
on this below). The server that sends you this list handles thousands
of messages a day. If your address becomes "bad" (for instance, you
quit AOL but we think you're still there) then we start getting
bounced messages. We get thousands a day now. Please don't make it
worse.

6. Remember three addresses:
a. IF YOU NEED HELP, CONTACT ME. My address is

b. To post a message to this list (so it goes to all other
subscribers) send it to

c. To send a command (commands are discussed below) send a message
to

7. DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE (SEND ARGUMENTATIVE OR CRITICAL MESSAGES) ON THE
LIST. IF YOU ARE FLAMED, DO NOT RESPOND VIA THE LIST!!!!

8. Please stay on topic. Just below is a description about what this
list is for. Please stay close to that subject. (Keep in mind
that history is an important part of genealogy. Current topics
usually are not.)

9. Most email programs can send attachments (attched files). Don't send
these to the list. (Some programs will send a small attachment with
your signature or something like that and you can't shut that off;
that's okay.) This isn't a problem for the mail server, but these can
cause some subscribers' machines to lock up, make them lose all their
mail, even crash their hard drive!

A GEDCOM file can be a huge attachment; so can an encoded graphics
file (if you don't know what those are, you probably won't be sending
them, but a lot of you will understand these terms). If you want people
to have these, announce them via the list and have people send you a
private email requesting them.

================================================================
$%$%$%$ Are you getting mail? $%$%$%$

If you're reading this, then you've signed up for this list.

IF YOU DO NOT START RECEIVING MAIL SOON, SEND A SINGLE MESSAGE TO THE LIST
at introducing yourself, and explain your interests,
resources and the names and places and dates you are looking for. If you
get a copy of your message returned then everything is working. If you
don't get a copy of your own message than email me and tell
me about the problem.

================================================================

If you can browse the Web, you can also check these URLs for information on
genealogy lists:

================================================================
$%$%$%$ I don't like what some people say on the list! $%$%$%$

The list is not moderated. Any message sent to it is automatically bounced
back out to everyone on the list. While I in no way want to stifle free
discussion, as list owner I reserve the right to step in if a flame war
erupts, if some thread (a series of messages on the same subject) becomes
tedious for other subscribers, or if someone becomes unseemly (excessive use
of profanity, for instance).

The most important key on your keyboard is the DELETE key. If you don't like
a message, delete it. Don't send a cutting or snide remark back to the list.
The rest of us don't want to read it, and it just adds to the clutter of
useless messages. If you feel there is a serious problem caused by someone,
send me a message at

If you have a personal message for someone, please send it to their address,
not the list server address. Any mail sent to BANAT will automatically be
sent to everyone on the list.

================================================================
$%$%$%$ COMMANDS $%$%$%$

To subscribe to the list, send a message to

and put

SUB

in the body of the message (not the subject line). You can put anything you
want in the subject; it's ignored.

To unsubscribe, send a message to

with

UNSUB

in the body. ***DO NOT*** SEND THESE MESSAGES TO !

To post a message to the list, send it to

================================================================
$%$%$%$ Are the messages archived (saved) somewhere? $%$%$%$

Yes, This space is under construction.

================================================================
$%$%$%$ How soon should I get an answer? $%$%$%$

When you send a message to the list, you will get a copy back (since you're
a subscriber, too). The software used here can't be set differently.
(listserv can be set to not send you a copy back.)

When you SUB or UNSUB you'll get an answer back from BANAT-L-REQUEST (maybe
NOBODY).

Depending on a lot of factors, you may get an answer in 5 minutes or 2
hours, sometimes even longer. We may be very busy here. Sometimes **your**
service rejects messages for awhile. GENERALLY, if you don't have an answer
in 12 hours, suspect a problem and try again.

================================================================
$%$%$%$ I'm having a problem $%$%$%$

Send me a message, but be specific. I can't help if you just say, "I'm
having a problem, help me." Tell me what it is. Tell me what you did or
tried to do. If you received some kind of error message, send it to me.

If you get an error message from BANAT-L-REQUEST, it will tell you what the
error is.

A LOT of problems are caused by:

You tried to UNSUB and BANAT-L-REQUEST says you're not a subscriber, yet
you're getting mail.

Take a look at the last message you received from the list an look at
the header information and see to what address it was used to send that
message. If it is different than the one you are using you cannot UNSUB
yourself, and you will have to ask me to do it for you, but give me specific
addresses involved.

================================================================

The Banat Listserver, an electronic mailing list of researchers interested
in their genealogy in the German-speaking people of southeastern Europe
referred to as Donauschwaben. The list was founded by Bob Madler in
February, 1995 to serve as a forum for help and discussion for those
interested in Donauschwaben history, customs, and genealogy. It had grown to
nearly 300 subscribers by May of 1997.

The only requests we make of new subscribers are to be friendly, helpful and
to post a list of names and villages you are researching. People have made
many genealogical links because of this list, and it is a credit to the
members that they are willing to share their data and experience to those
with common interests. Even if you do not find any relatives in this list,
it is likely that another reader has already faced and overcome the research
problem that you are currently facing. Providing general consulting about
the best and fastest ways to accomplish your research goals is one of the
most useful services this list can provide.

For a complete listing of the FAQ files see the FEEFHS server mentioned above.

Note: Please send any corrections to Chris Lamesfield (),
Moderator. He is your focal point for collecting all comments on the
*content* of this Banat FAQ. Contact him at : . Please
direct any and all suggestions for additions, modifications, changes, etc.
to him.

There is a definite lack of structure, but you have not intruded on private
correspondence. Informality is a large part of the charm of this list. The
members of this list have come together through their common interests to
provide information and support to each other's genealogical search.

Per the usual Internet advice, one should read the messages for a few days
or a week to become acquainted with the etiquette and customs of any group.
Shortly thereafter, please post a query about the surnames and the villages
being researched. Questions are encouraged. Someone will be sure to respond
to you, either with a complete answer or a partial clue.

If your genealogy research has led you to any of the geographical areas
mentioned below, this list is one of the best places you can be. Members of
the Banat list have extensive and varied education and experience in the
history, culture, and genealogy of the Donauschwaben and are very willing to
share their knowledge.

Thanx, and good hunting,
Chris
