Regarding the existence of a law that restricted emigration to
certain ports and certain ship lines, I can report that my
grandfather migrated from Neu Beschenowa from the port of Bremen on
the North German Lloyd Lines on Aug 11, 1903. My mother accompanied
by my grandmother emigrated from the same port on February 26, 1907.
As to the claim that the government and Cunard were conspiring to
keep fares to the U.S. high, one will find that a one way passage to
the U.S. in steerage was around ten dollars. Doesn't seem like much
of a gouge, does it?
