Subject: RE: given names - naming converntions?

Robert,
I'll be interested if you get any private email responses to this. I
have never heard of this with German families, but that is precisely the
custom followed in the Italian side of my family. It gets real
confusing at family get-togethers. My mom has something like 35-40
first cousins, and half of them are named John, Mike, Sofie or Teresa.

I have noticed a pattern in the given names of the first and
second
children in my grandfather's family.
Eldest son - named after paternal grandfather
2nd son - named after maternal grandfather
Eldest daughter - named after maternal grandmother
2nd daughter - named after paternal grandmother
Was this a common practice or just coincidence in my family?
