Frank;
According to my notes the LDS people have two cameras in operation since
1985 in Croatia although both are not always active. Church records are
shipped to Zagrab from around the country for filming. 1800 rolls have
been received from individual churches and from archives in Zagreb,
Osijek, Varasdin, Zadar and Dubrovnik.
For Slovenia from Sept 1992 to Aug 1994 one camera filmed civil
registration---1868-1918 in Marburg. 250 rolls received. I may have
missspoke slightly about Serbia. "A representative first visited in Dec
1994. Negotiations have been hindered by US sanctions imposed as a
result of the civil war." But Mehr seemed to think things were
promising. The big hangup in all this the question; are the records one
wants, collected into a central archives? The LDS people do not go
around to churches filming church books. They will go to a central
archives, set up a camera and film what is there. If the records are
still in the local churches then they must be brought in for filming.
That depends on the cooperation of local parish authorities and it is
easy for items to get overlooked. Of course we are all interested in
the Yugoslavia Banat and Batschka and it sounded a lot more promising
than any progress with the Romanian Banat. I think the Banat is a
fairly low priority with the LDS people because compared with other
groups there are so few of us. They want the most bang for their
buck----don't we all.
