Subject: [BANAT-L] North Dakota Passenger lists
Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 22:08:41 -0800

We have now retyped the North Dakota Banat passenger ship database which
was previously posted on the FEEFHS website. The previous, awkward,
arrangement of entries and notes have been converted to an integrated
format. In addition, ca 150 new entries have been added for a total of
ca 800, so that the coverage is fairly complete for ND Banaters coming
through Baltimore 1892-1912 and New York for the years 1903 and 1906.
Scattered entries for other years of the port of NY are included. Most
of the entries in this ND database are not duplicated in the previous
Banat passenger ship locality databases.
Although the FEEFHS website is again available after John Movius's move
to Salt Lake it is uncertain if and when this revised database will be
available on the site. For the immediate future we can make the
database available on request as an e mail attachment or as a hard copy
by the post.
There may be LIST members who have ship arrival data for ND Banaters
which we do not yet have in the database. Those who have such data and
would like to submit it for inclusion can email it to me for inclusion.
For an entry I need name, ages, date of arrival, ship's name, ports of
arrival and last destination as well as any other biographical
information in the entry. Such data must come from an original ship
list. Data taken from naturalization papers on ship arrival will not do
since it is all too frequently in error.
In order to test the prospects of using the passenger ship database as a
general framework to establish a more complete biographical profile for
Banters going to ND, we would also be willing to include any supplemntal
biographical informations LIST members may have.
The supplemental information in the entry would be set off by brackets
and the source given in parenthesis. Especially desirable, would be
maiden names, exact birth, marriage and death dates and places, parents
names but other appropiate information is not excluded. On the other
hand, extensive pedigrees would not be appropiate. Three examples of how
we envision this formate follow;
l.
NAME AGE DATE OF ARRIVAL SHIP PORTS LAST RESIDENCE
GAERTNER Karl 40 15 Mar 1898 Dresden Bre/Bal Setschan
[Son of Mathias Gaertner and Eva Cortiza, b 8 Mar 1858 in Ernsthausen.
Married Anna Kathrein, dau of Karl Kathrein and Eva Schuk in Setschan(R
Linster)].
2.
NEUROHR Johann 26 1 Sep 1898 Willehad Bre/Bal Pardan
Accompanied by wife, Maria 24 and daughters, Barbara 4 3/4, Maria 3 and
Katharine 2[John Neurohr also lived in Lenauheim and Grabatz, married
Maria Furnies(A Mumper)].
3.
PILGER Franz 40 16 Dec 1892 Stuttgart Bre/NY
Accompanied by wife, Resi 37 and kids, Katharina 17, son Levi 8 and
Margaret 6. Initial destination is New York.[Born in Gr Jetscha, name
evolved into Billyer in the U. S. Died in a house fire in Portland,
Oreg, 11 Jul 1915(D Dreyer)].
If this arrangement works out the database would be slowly evolving and
arrangements would have to be made so that members could access the
latest version. For the forseeable future I would be prepared to supply
updated versions on request.
Moreover, one can imagine using the previous locality ship databases as
a framework to generate a master database of Banaters in America by
adding supplement information in the fashon described above.
Elaboration of some important points in this respect can follow later.
The Banat-LIST may be the ideal tool for compiling and dispersing such
information depending on the degree of participation and interest of
LIST members.
