Subject: [BANAT-L] Maine 1909

I have recently acquired the naturalization papers for my grandfather, John
Stiglitz, b, 8-9-1885 in Csatalja, Hungary (his wife, Elisabeth Ginder, b.
8/24/1888, also in Csatalja). I now know that Grandpa came on the Maine from
Bremen. Germany, arriving approx. 12/27 or 28/1909, into New York (though
someone with his census page says he may have come through Philadelphia.
Does anyone have access to ship records, that would have his name on the
list? He apparently preceded Grandmother, as she was with child, and came
later (1911?). I'd like to find out what ship she came on, but she has no
naturalization papers, as apparently was the custom for women. They first
went to Akron, Ohio and lived at 1290 4th AVenue.
They settled in Banat, Michigan after that, with many other Banaters, though
they came from the Batshtka.

Also, Grandma Ginter had a brother, Mathias, who moved to Obernburg (from
Csalatja) and stayed in Germany. He married his brother, Franz's widow,
Maria and they had more children. I have photos of their family. I have
been trying to use the European phone book to see if there might be living
relatives of Mathias', still in Obernburg. I get entries, but don't know how
to interpret them. Could someone check the phone book for Ginter's (or
Ginder's) and let me know how I would address a letter to the Ginter's there?
Grandma's old address book listed her brother's address as Elsenfeld a/main,
Hofsteter Stras 10 1/16, Kreis Obernburg 13.a , Germany (What does it mean to
live in the Obernburg area? What does Elsenfeld a/main mean?

Any help is appreciated. I would like to get their names on the wall at
Ellis Island and am trying to document this. I'm still fairly new at all of
this genealogy, but am so excited about the progress I've made.
