Hi Gert--I have not had your same experience, but did have an ancestor who
traveled under a variation of his name that he never used in the USA--not
even on his intent and naturalization papers--and the archives found him.
Do you have the
naturalization papers as well as the Declaration of Intent? Might be good
to verify your information by comparing them.
Did the National Archives
find the ship at all? If not that is one kind of problem. If they found
the ship, but not your people there may be a problem with a date, a
spelling or a port of arrival. Might be good to compare your data to
census data to verify the year of arrival in the usa.
Once you have checked all this, ask the archives to search again. Perhaps
the researcher missed your folks, while another might find them.
I requested ship's records for Albert John Norman, age 20, from Sweden. An
extraordinary researcher found him, but he was listed as J.A.Sundstrom,
age 19, from Norway.
I won't bore you
with the details of how I verified the entry, except to say that I knew
that Sundstrom was an abandoned old country name and I had put it in
brackets on my request form. I think that Norway was probably an
entry error.
Good Luck,
Josette Hatter
