Shortly after my husband & I were married (11 yrs ago) his grandparents,
George & Gertrude Adam (both born in Sacalaz), were busy answering my
many queries as to their life in the "Old Country".
I asked if they had ever traveled far from their village of Sacalaz. The
reply was, of course, "no". That is, not until their uncertain decision
to travel & make their home in Canada.
I then asked if they had ever traveled for a vacation since living in
Canada. "Whelllll," Grandpa replied thoughtfully, "we once went with
friends for a day to a beach to have a swim." They couldn't recall
where the beach was but I'm sure it was no greater distance than 70
miles or so from Kitchener.
They looked at each other & chuckled.
I was then told about the WOOL bathing suit they had. It was of course
the
style that both men & women used to wear in the late 20's - one piece,
with a bit of a leg in them, that could reveal nothing of one's body.
Grandma put on the suit in the change house & had her little swim. When
she had had enough of playing in the water she went to change into her
dry clothes. She handed the wet suit to Grandpa under the change house
door.
Of course, you can probably guess!
Grandpa then put on the same wet, wool suit & went in for his dip.
That was the only swim either ever had. But some 60 years later both
recalled it as a very special memory.
The bathing suit no longer exists. Unfortunately, the moths got at it in
their attic & had a feast.
Hope this lightens your day a little.
