John:
Interesting question. I have the answer told me by my mother. Her mother, my grandmother, Anna Maria (Klem) Lambing from Josefsdorf pierced all the infant girls' ears and put in gold button earrings. This was to prevent ear aches. My mother wore hers all her life (94 years) and claimed that she never had an earache in her entire life. Probably my grandmother got that belief from her mother, etc.
Can anyone top this?

Subject: [BANAT-L] New subject: customs?
Hi All,
I am fairly new to this site but I have already learned all kinds of
interesting information. I have also coresponded with individual members of
this site and so far its been the best site I have been on for genealogy. So
I just want to say thanks to everyone here.
My Question about customs of the people in the Banat?
Does anyone here know anything about ear piercing and the wearing of
earrings by the women?
Both my Grandmother, Magdelena Kaip Meininger born July 20,l889 in
Ernthausen and her sister Mary Kaip Martin born May 27,l888 in Ernthausen
wore pierced earrings, maybe all there lives?
Now I know that this is not the kind of question you are usually asked but
I got to thinking about it because it might have some cultural significance?
So anyone out there who knows anything about it please write to me and let
me know what you think or know. Thanks
Sincerely,
Linda Chorpening
