Hi Luci,
The Military records of WW I will be in Hungaria, or even more likely in Vienna.
The records of WW II are more complicated... I don´t know if Romania or
Yugoslavia still have records about ethnic Germans serving in their Armys, if so
they are defenitly not on the net but anyway after, Yugoslavia was occupied by
the german Army the ethnic Germans of the Banat "were forced to volunteer" for
the
7. Waffen-SS Freiwilligen Gebirgs-Division " Prinz Eugen" in 1942.
These papers were partly in the "Berlin Document-center" of the Allied Command
of Berlin, but was given back to the german military archiev after Reunification
in 1990.
So it switched from American law -public information act, I guess- to german law
and that means the documents are not public as long as people of this unit are
still alive!
So you must sent a letter there, proofing that a relative was a member of that
unit and then they´ll help, if they can.
Though there are some books that tell something about that unit.
Although historical research has proofed that they were not volunteers, it´s sad
that it is proffed that the unit was involved in a maijor war crime in 1944.
After Partisans had killed 30 men of the unit they shoot 300 civileans, old
men, woman and children, so I felt a weired way of relieve, that my grandpa died
in the field in 1943....
Hope this helps a bit
Andy
