Prior to 1867, the name was the Austrian Empire, sometimes also called the
Habsburg Empire, for all the territories of present Austria and Hungary
(plus others). There was a fair amount of local autonomy in Hungarian
lands, except for military frontier areas which were governed directly from
Vienna. The legal connection was that after the defeat of the Hungarian
army by the Turkish army and death of the King of Hungary in 1526 at the
Battle of Mohacs, the remaining nobles of Hungary elected the head of the
house of Habsburg as King of Hungary.
In 1867, for many reasons, the Habsburgs and the Hungarians negotiated the
so-called Ausgleich, which vested authority in the Hungarian Parliament for
government in Hungary and its constituent lands, Slovakia and Croatia. As
a result, the official name (in English) became the Austro-Hungarian
Empire, sometimes called the Dual Monarchy. This lasted until 1918.
