Subject: [BANAT-L] W32/BADTRANS@MM Virus
Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 19:35:01 -0500
Hi, group!
McAfee identifies the virus you describe as W32/BADTRANS@MM.
Coincidently, I had to warn a friend of mine a few weeks ago about her having this virus, without her even being aware of it. The way this virus works is by replying to all the unread e-mail messages the infected computer receives, and mailing itself through an attachment that the virus itself creates (the name of the attachment varies; but you can find a list of the names at McAfee's web site), and adding a note, suggesting the recepient to see the attachment. So, if you receive a reply from someone you have written to, without anything new in it, except the attachment, and the note asking you to see the attachment, you know you are dealing with this virus, and should not open the attachment.
My suggestion to all is: Keep your antivirus program current (with the most recent DAT. file and engine as possible), and avoid opening any attachments that look suspicious; especially those that contain executable programs!
Sincerely,
Danny Eberhardt
