I can only speak for my own family, but since my father's parents came from
Mramorak, in the Banat, perhaps it is applicable to your situation.

I have always been told, that in these families, it was customary to call an
older, more respected person, WHETHER RELATED OR NOT, "Uncle", as a means of
showing honor and respect. Consequently, in my Dad's family, there were
"extended" family members, either distantly or not even related, that were
called "Uncle" or "Cousin", when they were really neither!
