My daughters are one quarter each Hungarian, Czech, Polish (from L'vov-now
in the Ukraine), and Banater Swabian. If they marry men with similarly
diverse backgrounds, they will probably have to start calling themselves
American, or hope to meet patient people who will sit through eight-fold
genealogies....

Ethnicity never fully defines anyone.
For instance, the grandchild of a Banater who emigrated to the
US will probably have more in common with the grandchild of Italian
immigrants living next door than with a German still living in Romania.
Still, I have never heard of any "white" US citizen referring to
himself as an ethnic American.
