Hello Brigitte and All

Dave's initial attempt to locate your P. Steinmetz by using the census
prompted me to do a quick check via a data subscription service I currently
have access to. I found the following information, which is consistent in
some ways, but inconsistent in others, with the data you provided regarding
P. Steinmetz. I might add that there were/are alot of Steinmetz families in
Ohio, so it is possible that somewhere along the line, researchers may be
confusing a couple of those named Peter perhaps.
Anyway, I hope the following may be of interest to you. This info is for
Peter Steinmetz who lived in Dayton, OHIO.

1920 Federal Census for Ohio
Roll: T625_1420 Page:4B ED: 77
Steinmetz, Philip
Age: 30 [so *~1890 - or a little older than Jacob, his brother born 1894?]
Birthplace: Magyarorszag [supposed to be Nagytoeszeg? which is still
Yugoslavia, but doesn't match Torchau]
County: Montgomery
Township: Butler (I think this makes it Dayton, Ohio)

On the actual census sheet, the wife is listed as Helen, age 26 born in Ohio
(suggesting a second wife perhaps, if there was a first?), with one son,
Rowland age 2 2/12. Philip's birthplace is Hungary with immigration date of
1908, and he was naturalized (got citizenship) in 1918. Mother tongue is
German -- and his parents are born in Hungary with mother tongue German.
Philip's occupation was toolmaker.
____________
1910 Federal Census for Ohio
State: OH Enumeration District: 0109 Visit: 0195
Phillip Steinmetz
Age: 20
Color: W
Birth Place: GER
County: Montgomery, Dayton
Relation: Boarder
Other Residents: Head of Household William Schultze W

Philip is not married in this census (1910), living in Dayton, OH proper,
occupation pressman, and his BP and tongue are listed as German. It is not
unusual to see "Germany" for birthplace of a DS who speaks German, if someone
else in household was providing information. (it indicates Hungary for this
person in the 1920 census)

Here is the death record for the person above I think.
Steinmetz, Philip
Death Date: 06 August 1977
Place of Death: Montgomery County
Residence: Montgomery County
Gender: Male
Race: White
Age: 87 Years [thus *~1890]
Marital Status: Married
Death Certified by: Physician
Autopsy: Unknown
Birth Date: Birth State:
Certificate: 060627 Volume: 22978
Place of Accident: Out-of-State, Out-of-State Origin:

The US Social Security death index has the above individual as well
PHILLIP STEINMETZ
*05 Nov 1889
+ Aug 1977 45426 (Dayton, Montgomery, OH)
275-07-3764
issued Ohio

and this is the death record for the WIFE, Helen shown in the 1920 census.

Steinmetz, Helen Z
Death Date: 08 April 1987
Place of Death: Tiffin, Seneca County
Residence: Tiffin, Seneca County
Race: White
Age: 93 Years [matches census age]
Marital Status: Widowed
Death Certified by: Physician
Autopsy: Yes - Used for certification
Birth Date: 14 September 1893 Birth State: Ohio
Certificate: 030885 Volume: 26857
Place of Accident: (Home) Origin: German

I located a Roland Steinmetz in USA online phonebook living in Florida (one
ALWAYS looks for older folks from Ohio in Florida -- it seems they all retire
there.) I think there may be a good chance that this is the Rowland of the
1920 census.

There is an online DEATH INDEX for entire state of OHIO at
http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/
so I thought maybe I'd find something for a "Katherina" Steinmetz prior to
~1917, suggesting that a first wife might have died, and there are some
possible candidates listed, however, one can't tell ages from the index, so
couldn't come up with anything definitive here.

There are more Steinmetz's in the following online CLEVELAND death index,
some of which were already posted.

I did not find anyone in the Ellis Island online database of immigrant
passenger arrival records that matched data given on Philipp Steinmetz for
arrival around 1908, searching with alternate names/spellings even. The
extraction database of Dave's shows the following, but appears to be another
person based on ages etc.
STEINMETZ Philip -[S353]- Age: 27 -From: Mramorak
-DtAr: Wednesday, 21 Dec 1904 - To: St Louis, MO -Via: Bre/Bal -Ship:
Brandenburg
-Note: Going to join bro-in-law, Philipp Eber.

Hope there is something here worth pursuing perhaps.

Best regards
Linda
