Hi,
someone request information about 'Jagst'. I don't remember who it was as I
have deleted the message. t
The Jagst is a river in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. There was also a
Jagstkreis and there used to be four Kreise (plural of Kreis) in Baden-Wuerttemberg:
Neckarkreis, Jagstkreis, Donaukreis and Schwarzwaldkreis. Each Kreis was
divided into Oberaemter (plural of Oberamt). Oberaemter don't exist anymore since
the 1930s but the term is still used in genealogy and can be found in the old
churchbooks in regards to defining in which Oberamt a town was located back
then. A Oberamt and Kreis can be compared to a county. Modern german states are
divided into Regierungsbezirke and then further into Landkreise and Citykreise.
The grand duchy of Baden and the kingdom of Wuerttemberg merged in 1952 and
became the new state Baden-Wuerttemberg which now consists of 44 Kreise: 35
Landkreise and 9 Stadtkreise.
Hope this helps,
Mary-Ann
