Hello List,
Probably a dumb question, but at the time when many
came to the Banat from Luxembourg (say around the
1760's), were those folks generally already considered
"Luxembourgish", or had that identity not been firmly
established yet...where they were considered more
ethnic-German or ethnic-French who happened to come
from the duchy of Luxembourg? If one had ancestors
who came from Luxembourg (I still haven't determined
if this is the case with me, but it may be) around
1760 to the Banat, would you say your ancestors were
Luxembourgish, or would it still essentially be
"German" or "French"? In looking at films of areas in
Luxembourg in the early 1700's, I saw almost nothing
but German-sounding names. Of course, I have no idea
what a Luxembourgish-sounding name would be, so I'll
leave it at that and look forward to responses on the
subject.
I guess its not all that different from asking when an
American becomes ethnically an American as opposed to
a person of English (or whatever) descent who comes
from America. Hmmm...
Scott
