David-

I have two of Martha Connor's books but have not seen the originals yet (on
FHL microfilm). I was waiting to see if someone else responded who has more
experience with the census, but since nothing has been posted to the list
yet...

Connor and the original sheets?

The originals have more information. However, since this was a tax census
there's more data on number of animals than other family members. Also keep
in mind that it lists only those who owned land.

Martha's books are indexes to the census, and should save a lot of time when
trying to look up someone in the microfilms.

See these two web sites for information on the data available from the
originals:

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/Census1828.htm

(Note regarding the Jewishgen link: The database to list Jews from the 1828
census is being done directly from the microfilms to avoid infringing on
Martha's copyrights.)

This site has general information on the various Hungarian censuses:

Column 2 is a partial count: "The number of people in each household,
including servants, between the ages of 18 and 60, of either sex and whether
married or not, contributing to the financial well-being of the household."
(Quote from the Jewishgen page.)

I don't think the house numbers were recorded. Column 4 appears to have the
number of houses owned, not the house numbers.

Hopefully someone else on the list who's actually looked at the census has
or will.

Hope this helps!

Dear Friends,

What is the difference between the transcript of the 1828 census by Martha
Connor and the original sheets? As the transcript I have contains only a
line number and the name of the head of household. Were numbers of family
members or house numbers registered at the original sheets? Could somebody
email me a scan of an original sheet? First of all, I am searching for
StHubert, Charleville, Seultour, Heufeld and Mastort.

Thank you in advance,
David
