Susan-

Two places where you can get an idea as to whether they ever applied:
- U.S. Census: Has a column for citizenship status
- Passenger list: Often shows a handwritten "certificate of arrival" number
and sometimes a date. The first digit of the certificate number is an
indication of the area where they applied.

On problem with tracking down the naturalization petition itself is the
variety of courts that it might have been filed with, but if you do find it,
you'll find a LOT of information.

The National Archives has Federal court petitions, but I don't believe they
have state or county court records. The Mid-Atlantic branch in
Philadelphia, for example, has indexed petitions from the Federal courts in
the three districts of Pennsylvania. The microfilm includes the
naturalization petition as well as the associated certificate of arrival and
declaration of intent.

How does one find out if an ancestor - like grandparents or great
grandparents ever applied to US citizenship? Is the application registered
with the National Archives?
Thanks for any help. Susan
