Dear Jody:
Dorothy Alice Barbee is my grandmother. She had 5 brothers. They were (1)
Willis Monre Barbee who was named after their grandfather (brother of John
Gaston Barbee) b. 3-16-88 d. 8-8-68 and was a Texas Ranger, (2) Claude Barbee
the outlaw, b. 1- ?- 83 d. 1-1-49 (3) W.E.Oliver Barbee b. 1- - 84 d. ? (4)
Jessie Barbee, b. 11-27-87 d. 7-7-47 (5) James William Barbee who was a lawyer
in Calif. b.7-4-81 d. 7-17-31
After James Monroe Barbee was ambushed in 1895 (their mother died in 1892),
the children were farmed out in pairs to relatives. My grandmother Dorothy
and Willis went to a aunt and uncle Russ and Willie Rhoades. Claude and James
went to their maternal grandmother Isabella Taylor and Oliver and Jessie went
to their paternal grandfather, Willis Monroe Barbee (brother of John Gaston
Barbee). All were in the Hico Texas area for some time. I really have
little information on Oliver, Jessie and James.
Eloise Barbee Hunter is the daughter of Willis Monroe Barbee. She live in San
Angelo Texas and has an incredible amount of information on the Barbees. She
is the one who gave me directions to the old Barbee cemetary in Hico.
Do you have any info on Reuben Barbee and his children?
Do you know anything about a Barbee family reunion in Hico? I had heard there
was one in late May or June each year.
