To the Barnes List:

I have had several requests for my summary of land records for any BARNS /
BARNES in the Ninety Six District of S.C. It may not include every
possible record, but it is the best I have been able to assemble so far. I
would be very grateful for any additions to this list.

District, surveyed by George Salmon. [Appears to be Greenville
Co., although the alphabetical index to the SC Archives did not
state the county.

25 Aug 1797 BARNES, John, of Greenville Co., SC, deed dated 25 Aug 1797 to
John SWAFFER proved before Robert COOK by the oath of Daniel
BLYTH, 7 Apr 1798, for L30 sterling, 50 acres adjacent Mager
GOWENs Corner... John BARNES (B), Wit: William BLYTH, Daniel
BLYTH. [Comments by Mr. Holcomb: "'Mager Gowen'* was Major
John
Gowen, a well-known figure in upper Greenville County near the
Spartanburg line. I believe that the current community of
Gowensville was near his residence."] From Greenville County

13 May 1799 BARNS, Mary, bought 100 acres from William KANNON of Greenville
Co., SC (part of a tract run by Thomas BRUMMETT and by him
conveyed to John CONENHOVEN and from him to John GLASS). Wit:

[Formed c1789 and abolished in 1826 to form Anderson and Pickens Districts.

04 Nov 1793 Dennis BARNES of Pendleton County, SC, bought from Francis
WHELCHEL of same county, tract of land granted 4 Jan 1790 to

MOORE on both sides of Carpenters Creek for L60. Francis
