I am a Barnhart and I have a copy of "Winter Wedding" by Martha Barnhart
Harper published in 1950 by Longmans, Green and Co., New York, London,
Toronto.
The book is a fictional romance story about Martha's (I believe) real
ancestors, i.e. what she speculates happened in the years following the
Civil War, 1865-67. The story takes place mainly in Iowa with Belle
Barnhart moving there to teach school following the untimely death for
her bow, Evan, in the war. There is good description of life and
Barnhart family members in PA and new friends and suitors in Iowa. She
must decide on staying in Iowa and marrying a dashing man Will or
marrying a war-scared but thoughtful man named Sam. I will not spoil
the ending for those who want to read the book, but it was an
interesting escape into the mid-1800's life. It is not a great literary
work. There is no index and limited Barnhart family history. I do not
recall what religion the family was.
My copy is quite old and somewhat beat up. I got it from another
Barnhart researcher on the Barnhart List on Rootsweb.
