Some people say Moses was the son of Thomas and Susan (Keys) Barton and that
Thomas was the son of David who md. Ruth Oldham. The problem with that is
David's son, Thomas, md. SARAH Keyes and as far as I've been able to tell from
my research, Sarah was never called Susan. There's a list of 12 children which
descendants of Thomas and Sarah have compiled. Moses isn't listed among them.
Some say Moses was the son of Thomas of Jefferson Co., AL. There were several
Bartons by that name in Jefferson Co. One of them was md. to a Susan, but that
particular Barton was too young to be the father of Moses. The other Thomas
Bartons (at least one of them) were old enough, but I've not been able to find
enough data on them to make any kind of assessment.
I do know from legal records that Moses sold land belonging to James Barton, Sr.
in Pendleton District, SC. If there's a James Barton, Sr., there should be a
James Barton, Jr. Moses was living next to a James Barton who was an age to be
his brother (and a son of James Barton, Sr.) The property Moses sold was
situated close to land belonging to Joseph Barton who had previously lived in
Laurens Co., SC. There had been a James Barton living in Laurens Co. before the
1890 census. By the 1890 census, James of Laurens was gone, but a James Barton
was enumerated in the 1890 Pendleton District census with sons of an age to be
Moses and James, Jr. The James in Laurens Co. had a wife named Rebecca. Moses
had children named James and Rebecca.
After James Barton, Sr. died in 1803, Moses, James (Jr.?) and the widow of
James, Sr. disappeared from Pendleton. By 1820, there was a female head of
household named Rebecca living in Pendleton Dist. By 1830 she was not listed in
the Pendleton District census, but a Rebecca turned up in Hall Co., GA near my
Willis Barton who is known to be some how related to Moses. My Willis named his
first son, James.
This is just a summary of the details explained in theWillis Barton section of
my web page under the golden key.
Since this scenario presents the best circumstantial evidence of the parents of
Moses, I have been trying to prove or disprove this theory for the last few
years.
I wish I knew where the story of Thomas and Susan (Keyes) Barton originated
(such as who was the source listed in the annotated version of the 1800
Pendleton District census). It might have been a theory by a wistful
genealogist or it might have been an iron clad fact which one of our older
Bartons knew about for certain.
Does anyone else have documentation of any sort to add to this discussion?
