Subject: [BARTON] Edward Barton as the "alleged" father
Date: Wed, 05 Dec 2001 01:30:17 -0500
To my knowledge, NO ONE has come up with any proof that the alleged Edward
Barton was the father of Rufus, Roger, Marmaduke or anyone else.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of such speculation that has been feed into
the IGI,
data sheets and other "sources". As folks familiar with computers often say:
"garbage in, garbage out". I don't mean to be sounding harsh but we do need to
apply some scientific methods to historic/genealogical research, not just
speculation,
oral histories with no supporting data or the repetition of previously
cited incorrect data.
I mention oral histories in particular since I've recently discovered that
several oral histories
in my familar are likely wrong.
Adolph Law Voge, a researcher in the 1920's and 30's of the Roger Barton line,
states that such links are rumored but even researchers who spent extensive
time with
British sources have come up empty handed.
BTW, the info below about Roger Barton conflicts with most other sources in
terms of
birth dates. He had nothing to do with Rhode Island and died in Westchester
County, NY.
That much has been proven since his will has been found, unless the alleged
father
Edward had two alleged sons named Roger. I'd be surprised that Roger would
have had
a daughter Elizabeth who died in Rhode Island since the family was firmly
rooted in
the Westchester/Yorktown area, spreading later into Connecticut and then
later across
the Hudson into Spring Valley and points west. Is there proof that this was
the same
Elizabeth, a common name?
Adolph Law Voge's research paper: "The Kinsmen of Roger Barton" provides some
fascinating info about Roger Barton and his descendants of the lower Hudson
Valley
area of New York. Roger settled there when it was still New Amsterdam and soon
got into trouble with the Dutch, fleeing into Connecticut and later
returning to Westchester.
If I'm wrong, I'd welcome any corrections supported by DOCUMENTARY evidence.
This includes vital statistic records, wills, land records, church records,
old family bibles,
passenger ship records, ,etc, etc - not the IGI other data sheets (unless
footnoted) or even census records listing someone who perhaps has the same
name. It's indeed tough to come across such hard evidence but most other
"sources" have to be regarded with a "grain of salt".
Douglas Losty (descendant of Roger Barton, at least to the extent supported by
documents)
