Ethel,
Thanks for the reply, here is a something I put together on my BARTONs in
New York and Ohio. I have a lot of records from Ohio, but very little from
New York. I suspect a New York connection with other BARTONs.
My Edwin H. BARTON worked the Erie Canal trade in the 1830s with a store
and/or shipping business in Canastota, Madison County, New York. Edwin most
likely was started in business by another BARTON ancestor. By 1844 he and
his brother William S. BARTON had moved to the Ohio frontier of the Miami
Valley. They started operating canal boats on the Miami Canal and by 1850
operated a merchandise store in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. Goods from this
store were most likely bought in New York, traveled the Erie Canal for
Albany to Buffalo, then across the lake by steamer to Toledo and down the
Miami Canal to Piqua. My BARTONs were not farmers, they were all store
owners or boat shippers. I believe that my BARTONs were most likely related
to other BARTONs who either owned stores or shipping businesses from New
York City all the way to Piqua, Ohio. I would like to make contact with
other BARTON searchers whose ancestors were either in New York City or
on/near any Erie Canal town from 1825 to 1860.
Thanks for all the help,
gary
