Hi Listers:
I also have wondered about the lack of activities on some of the lists I belong to. One thing I have learned about Bassetts, well, two things; there are a LOT of them and they are NOT all connected, nor from one country of origin or ethnicity. Some England, some France, via Canada. Who knows where else.
Our Bassetts apparently were Bessette, coming down from Canada. Unfortunately, or not, there also have been Bassetts in Canada, and many of them in New York, New Hampshire and Vermont, and elsewhere. Bassetts who really were, and Bassetts who WERE Bessette, changed to Bassett. No wonder I'm confused!
The Bassett list has not been a help to me so far as the focus seems to be on English Bassetts. I joined the Bassett and Bessette surname boards and the Quebec List and have had some clues. To add to that dilemma, whether they were Bassett or Bessette, they used many of the same names over and over again, such as: William and Joseph. (I have a brother in law named Clarence - his family and friends call him Joe! I can't win!)
Do you suppose there was one original, first, or one of a kind Bassett/Bessette or whatever he was called, who is responsible for all this? I'd like to talk to HIM!
