Subject: Re: Woodford County (KY) History
Hi! It's me again. I want to give you the bio sketch from the "History
of Woodford County (Kentucky)" by Wm. E. Railey (Reprinted from Register
of the Kentucky Historical Society 1920-1921) Published by Roberts
Printing Co., Frankfort, KY. 1938.
I got this sketch from a Bastin while we were living in Emporia KS, and
before I was doing much research on the Bastin's. There are several
Bastin families still living in the area around Emporia. I think they
are descendants of Richard Bastin who was in Woodford Co. KY. I remember
seeing an obit, or something, that gave some family history when I was
doing some volunteer work at the Historical Society Museum in Emporia.
Here's the sketch:
Richard Bastin and Joseph Roper were early arrivals in Woodford
County, both listed in the Federal census of 1810, the former having a
farm and one slave, and his family consisted of five members. The latter
owned a farm and two slaves and his family consisted of seven members.
Richard Bastin was born in Virginia in 1781, married in Woodford
County in 1804 Polly Roper, born in Virginia, April 1784. She was a
daughter of Joseph Roper, who was a Virginian by birth. The children of
Richard Bastin and Polly Roper were born in Woodford County. He died in
1816, and a few years later, in company with her brother, Jesse Mimms
Roper and his family, migrated to Howard County, Mo., where very many of
our pioneer citizens or their children located. The land upon which they
settled in that state is still in possession of descendants, the
homestead being the property of Henry C. Thrope, a grandson of Richard
Bastin. Many of the Buford descendants are in that county and state
also. I am informed that the Bastin descendants have always been a very
industrious, and a very religious class.
The children of Richard Bastin and Polly Roper were: Henrietta,
born October 12, 1806, died April, 1889, in Howard County, Mo., married
August 1823 Jackson Thorpe, born July, 1799. He was a son of Thomas
Thrope who was a son of the Rev. Wat Thorpe and Eleanor Jackson, of
Madison County, Ky.; John Vardin Bastin, born in March, 1808, died Dec.,
1851, married Ann Peary; Jesse Roper Bastin, born May, 1810, married
Harriet McAdams, and Mary Ann Bastin, born Sept., 1812, died May 1901,
married Dec., 1839, James Cash.
I hope there is some information in this that is helpful to someone!
Rut
