This is a very interesting thought. My grandfather's name was PICKEL which
in English means PIMPLE.
I read that when surnames were being added some people refused. This was
true of the Jewish people who wanted to keep the last name as "ben....." as
in "son of ......." The people who refused were given names by the German
government at that time and they were usually very uncomplimentary names.
My grandfather's family was NOT Jewish as far as we know. In fact, during
World War 2, his brother's daughter had to trace her family tree to prove to
Hitler that they were not Jewish. She lived in Munich.
Does anyone have any ideas if this giving of names was true?
