Hi All:
I have been just monitoring this group because I'm a new researcher and have
done very little on this line. However, as I've been reading the posts of
the last two weeks, I've become more and more convinced that my line fits in
here somewhere.
The information I have comes from notes sent to me by an elderly cousin.
They were given to her in 1970 by still another cousin (now deceased) who
actually did the research. Please bear in mind that I have not verified
these facts.
According to the material given to me, my ggg-grandfather would be a
Moody(or Moses) BEARD m. to Betsy (maiden name unknown). My gg-grandfather
was William Harvey BEARD b. 2 Oct 18l7 in Barnet (Caledonia) VT, d. 15 Dec
1872 in Reading (Middlesex) MA. He was married to Maria M. ALGER, b. 1819
in Canaan (Grafton) NH, d. 5 Oct 1883 (?)Reading, MA.
A note in this information has been puzzling me ever since I received it.
Even though William Harvey BEARD's birthplace is listed as Barnet, VT, the
note states, "one of eight brothers from Lake Erie, where his mother ran a
boat". Perhaps this could refer to his father??
Children of Moody (?Moses) BEARD and Maria Alger BEARD listed:
l. Curtis--was postmaster in Waterville, VT, m. Harriet
2. Homer of Barnet, VT
3. Henry--b. in Barnet, VT, m. Helen F. (or Ellen) of Ireland. Lived
in Reading MA.
4. Mary A. of Reading, MA, m. William A. Whittredge in Reading, 17 Aug
1845.
I have pages of Vital Statistics copied from the Reading, MA Town Clerk's
office and will gladly send them if anyone is interested. Also information
on descendants.
I made a trip to Barnet, VT last fall. Unfortunately, it was a weekend, but
we were able to wander through a couple of old cemeteries. I found the
following gravesites: (not sure how they relate, but think they must since
Barnet is a very small village)
John Q. Beard, b. 14 Sept 1820, d. 6 Dec 1863
(veteran) Co. D lst VT Vols
Lucy L. Fisher, wife of John Q. Beard, b. 7 May 1827, d. 26 Mar 1911
(above taken from tombstones)
Sorry to be so long-winded. Hope this makes some connection.
Priscilla
