Spartanburg, SC was filled with Scots-Irish from PA. And
there was a Capt. Robert BEARD that served in the Rev War.
who was from the Long Canes area, a mainly Scots-Irish
settlement.

However, there were other people living in the area before
the Scots-Irish came. There were also, Huguenots, and
Germans nearby. After the mid 1760s and a couple of Indian
masscres, many of the settlers moved to the eastern towns or
to the low-country. Some moved out of the state just across
the river into GA, and others went much further away into
TN, Ohio, IL, MS, LA, AL, AR... there is a website on
"Presbyterian Seceeders" that may be helpful if your family
was Presbyterian and in SC in the 1700s.

Do you have a religious connection to your BAIRDs during
that time? Are they listed in any church records?.

Also, remember that many families, or single men moved after
the Rev. War. And having fought in the area of SC a man may
have returned with his family. Or he may have been given a
land grant for service.

Check out some of the other genealogies from VA. I'm looking
into the one with CAMPBELLs, PRESTONs, and BALLARDs. These
families can be found throughout SC and in VA, and in TN,
and KY, and in a few other states. I think they had money.
Several of them were in politics.

I'm having a difficult time finding my Barnwell Preston
BEARD b. 1831 SC.

I can find no parents for this man. Maybe he was born here
and moved away... then returned. Not all families sat in one
place. Some were chased by Indians, war, poverty, death.
After a war a person may have come home to nothing, then
been offered a land grant in another state as compensation
for service. Others had money and bought new land, some
needed to find better land to farm, or needed work... and
many left with groups from churches to settle the west. Oh,
and I can't forget natural disasters. In South Carolina
hurricanes and earthquakes have moved a few people, as well
as diseases.

I think a pretty woman brought my BEARD to SC. Just need to
find out how he met her.

(this is what happens when I say up all night searching -
long emails)

Enjoy the Journey! ~
Janet
