Fee, this is looking interesting, but we can still not jump to
conclusions. This would mean that Richard was born about 1839 which was
after registration was made compulsory, so you should be able to find
his birth in St Catherines Index. If his parents were Richard and
Martha Beard nee Joyner, then your Richard would be my father-in-law's
uncle.

I will paste Martha's family in 1881 below, so you can see why I find it
interesting.
Charles (registered Cornelius Charles at birth) is my husband's
grandfather. He was born in Chelsea as was your Richard. After Charles
was born, Martha and our Richard must have moved to Islington. Martha
would have been about age 36 when Charles was born. It is likely that
Martha had other children before Charles Cornelius was born. It is also
likely that their eldest son would have been called Richard. If your
Richard was Martha's son, then she would have been about 18 when he was
born which is quite possible.

Another point is that my father-in-law, Arthur Beard, had a cousin he
called Nellie. As I understand it, Nellie is an alternative to Helen or
Ellen. Then there is the Hersey connection.

Another coincidence is that Cornelius Charles was born in 25 Gloucester
Place Chelsea Middlesex. Your family lived in 25 Gloucester Road
Camberwell Surrey! Since you live in England, you may be able to tell me
if the names of the streets, at that time, were in any way related to
the areas from which the residents originated. (Martha came from
Gloucestershire.)
