I am researching two separate BELL lines.
On one I have recently began making considerable progress thanks to the
work of Raymond Martin BELL. I found my three-great grandparents, John
McCULLOUGH and Elizabeth BELL, in one of his books and am now in the
process of working through his other work that has been microfilmed by LDS.
Although Raymond Bell does not have it in the book, John (1809-1863) and
Elizabeth (1810-1886) were married 7 July 1831 in Pittsburgh, Penn. (the
date is family tradition, I have not yet found an official record). They
moved to New Orleans shortly after their marriage and then to Missouri,
finally settling in Sullivan County in 1840.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Thomas BELL (1775-1825) and Mary McAllister
(1786-1834)
On the line, all I have for certain is the marriage of Margaret BELL to
Joseph MAIRS on 18 July 1822 in Jefferson County, Ohio. Joseph (1799-1870)
and Margaret were in Jackson County, (W)Va. by 1830. Margaret died there in
either 1852 or 1857 and Joseph subsequently moved to Sullivan County, Mo.,
with at least some of his children.
Joseph MAIRS was born in Ulster, the son of Benjamin MAIRS. Benjamin and
his sons Joseph and Benjamin Jr.declared their intention to become a U.S.
citizen on 24 Sept. 1822 in Jefferson County, Ohio, and were declared
citizens 15 Aug. 1825.
The naturalization record includes a listing of the Mairs household and
appears to include Margaret BELL Mairs at age 18 in 1822 and says she was
born in Ireland.
I have no clues as to who Margaret's parents might be.
