Subject: Scrolling throught the threaded archives.... some info

Today I scrolled through the whole archives, and my attention was immediately brought to two entries. An early one by Mary Allen about one John Benjafield being a murderer, listed in Lady Theodora Guest's "Motcombe: Past and present" and a recent entry from someone who is very learned about Hutchin's document about Dorset, and who corrected my entry about King John to King Edward.

We own a copy of Guests "Motcombe: past and present" and p. 8 says the following, " In the 28th year of King Edward I, A.D. 1300, the king issued a commission to Gilbert de Knoxville and others to make a perambulation of this forest, which they did ....amongst whose names the following are noticeable, as being still well known names in this part of the country --- Walter Skamel (My variation: Scammell), and John de Bengervill, verdurers: Walter de Wyk, .... etc. "

I believe that Verdurer has been muddled with 'murderer' as the original entry referred to this exact page. They sound alike, but verdurer obviously means 'forester', not murderer.

Cheers, all Gail in St. C.
