Subject: [BERDICHEV] Rediscovering Schools for Jewish Girls in Tsarist Russia
Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2007 07:58:01 -0700
Some time ago, Naomi Fatouros provided a very interesting report about
an essay called "Rediscovering Schools for Jewish Girls in Tsarist Russia"
by Eliyana Adler.
At the time I had been unable to locate it but finally found it today.
Below is a reprint of Naomi's orignal post and a link to the PDF format
of the essay.

Subject: "Aron FRUD" Berdichev girls school owner
----
Disappointingly, this mail group has fallen yet again into
silence. For months, I myself have had nothing new to contribute or
inquire about.
But I thought I should tell you that I recently downloaded an
interesting essay by Eliyana Adler, "Rediscovering Schools for Girls
in Tsarist Russia ." For whatever it may be worth to the group's
members or to one or two in particular, Ms. Adler notes that an Aron
FRUD ran a girl's chool in Berdichev. FRUD offered a "spiraling
grammar based program," first teaching reading in Russian and parts
of speech. The second class was in composition while the third class
was to hone their knowledge and skills. The fourth class required
was still more practice in such things as subordinate clauses.
FRUD had a sliding scale for payments, including a fee pf 180
roubles a year for girls who stayed in a pensiion while attending
the school. There were three other tuition and fee options which you
can read about and he also "actively recruited" students from among
the poor, by offering scholarships.
Ms. Adler also mentions a principal of a Berdichev Jewish girls
school in 1857 but I could not determine whether this was Frud's
school or another one. At this unnamed school, the principal
offered a two year study of religion and prayer. Unlike the prayerrs
many Jewish girls could read in Yiddish, the principal presented
texts which were studied in German translations of "Yesodii ha-
da'at by the Polish maskil Ben-Zeev.
I warmly urge you all to download this essay as it covers a
subject not often touched upon in many of the Jewish history books
I've read. I remember writing a reply year or two ago about the
education of Jewish girls to someone in another mail group who had
wondered what sort of education his ancestor could have received.. At
that time I answered as best I could, but I had not then read Adler's
essay. Some of you may have also wondered about the education of
your grandmothers and aunts.
To read Elianana Adler's essay yourselves, do a "google" search for
her name or for the title of her essay.
