Hi guys!
As the custodian of the wooden chest during the '70s and '80s I wanted
to put in my bit. During the early '60s when Mike was away at school, it
was stored up in one of the lofts of the Palmdale garage, which for a
long time were used to store a lot of scrap material from the shop that
was used to make braided rugs. Boy, I suddenly realize the associations
of the fragrance of that material were an important part of the whole
experience. Anyway, "getting into" that box was more or less forbidden
to me, as I recall (I say this 'cause even thought I remember this as
being so, I seemed to get away with it an awful lot), and one of my
sweetest memories is of getting up there with a couple of packages of
SweetTarts and a big glass of water (if you've ever eaten SweetTarts you
know why), making a "fort" out of the rug material, and spending the
whole, hot, summer afternoon reading those comic books. I remember that
"Heaven can't be any better than this" feeling to this day. By the time
Mike left home (again) in the early '70s, I had somehow attained a sort
of default proprietorship of the box (like Mike mentioned, I had caught
the Pogo bug and had added a few of my own books to the box - I think
the Classics Illustrated "Time Machine" was mine too) and it traveled
around with me (I remember carrying it like an Ark into every place I
moved into) until I moved to what's now Aaron's place (in 1990), where
not a cubic foot could be spared, and it went back to Mike.
