Hi Juani! --Yeah, the Harpies are even grosser in the original --those Greek
stories have a lot of vomit and spittle and stuff in them. For some reason
they're called "Larkies" in that comic (copyright conflict with Homer?). If you
are mytho-illiterate (I was) when you read it, you carry that telltale sign of
your source ("I learned Greek myth from Carl Barks!") with you until you learn
better (I think I ran across the authoritative version in college somewhere).
I don't think that comic is in the box, but I'm pretty sure the story appears
in a book of reprints I got (from Tony?) back in the '80's. I remember there
was some tie-in with parsnip pudding.
Those reprint books were really great--I wish I'd bought them all. Their
colors are a little more saturated than those in the original comics, but they
zeroed in on a lot of the best stories (e.g., Al will probably remember the one
where Donald and the kids are in Alaska trying to peddle a steam calliope to
the Indians.)
I'm trying to remember the old half-torn-up ones we had that I hung onto
just because they were pretty ancient. One was the one where they get stranded
in South America among natives who raise square chickens; another was the old
1946 issue I found at the Volunteers of America thrift shop downtown back when
I was in high school. That one's cover was, amazingly, familiar to me, as one
that Johnny had copied back in the '40's. His drawing, of Donald hunting a
moose, is probably still around somewhere, but the thrift store copy (it had
WWII references to "slanty-eyed" enemies!) seems to have gone to its reward.
