Hi again,
One of my favorite things in the Donald Duck/Scrooge comic books was the
Junior Woodchuck Guidebook. The boys were forever getting Donald and/or
Scrooge and themselves out some dire situation or another by consulting
it, and no matter how fantastic their situation was, it always had a
solution for that very situation. In the "Golden Fleece" adventure, they
were trapped by the sleepless dragon, and the Guidebook told them to
"pull the wool over his eyes." I remember Uncle Scrooge's disgruntled
expression accompanied by the gripe that the directions were "rather
obscure." But of course, they had the Golden Fleece with them, and one
of the boys climbed up the dragon's spines and covered his eyes with a
couple of chunks of it and the resulting darkness put him to sleep. Does
anyone remember Huey, Dewey and Louie having distinct personalities? One
more adventurous or cautious than the others? I don't, but it occurred
to me that a careful reading of who did what might reveal this. Then
there was the time they were trying to get out of Terry Firmy, the "land
beneath the ground", and they had to climb up a steep slope covered with
moss which they kept slipping on. Consulting the Guidebook (which Uncle
Scrooge came to have unquestioning faith in), it explained how you could
lift up the moss and get to the ground underneath it which you could
then climb without any trouble. I remember the panel where they're all
struggling up the slope, moving lumps underneath the moss.
Inspired by this, a friend of mine and I in grade school produced a
Junior Walnut Guidebook (I have no recollection of why we chose that
name), which contained one-line pieces of advice on dealing with such
dire problems as "boring teachers" and "bothersome girls"!
