Looking in the lists of 1871 landowners in Oxfordshire no ROBERTS are listed
but 7 are in Berkshire. John L ROBERTS had land in Wokingham while the Rev
Arthur ROBERTS owned land at Barkham. If you would like a photograph of the
page in the list for ROBERTS owning land in Berkshire let me know as I have
the original document.

Godfrey.

> Thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply.John ROBERTS solicitor
was my G/G/G/uncle.He was at one time Under Sheriff of Berkshire
1800-1829.He also owned 185 acres freehold and several small lots in Bampton
Oxfordshire as well as those in Wokingham. Alderman and Magistrate for
Wokingham and also Deputy to the Sheriff of Wiltshire. Was still working as a
Solicitor 3 months before he died in 1851 age 93 years.I think he could well
afford the £100 rates on Montague House.
> The ROBERTS family owned and lived in Montague from 1830-1889.After this
Henry Thrower ROBERTS his grandson occupied Montague House still owed by the
Executors of the ROBERTS family sometime before1891.
> I have no record of any papers that may tell us what he intended to do
with Montague House.
