Subject: (Fwd) James Biggs of Edgecombe
Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1998 21:27:12 +0000

I am forwarding this information that came from Joan on our list.
There is a lot of information, theories, books, etc out there----that is why we have to
give out our research, ideas, and theories-----don't be afraid to ask questions or
to theorize in this group......everyone will benefit from it in the long run!!!!!

Now this is the e-mail from Joan:
In reply to this letter - Mrs. Kate Biggs was correct. James Biggs who was
the son of John Biggs of Edgecombe County NC was not the James Biggs who
died in Robeson Co. NC. James Biggs of Edgecombe County was my
great-great-great grandfather. I possess a letter written by him in
Tennessee. He moved there from Edgecombe County late in his life and died
there on the farm of his son Davis Biggs in 1859. His son Joseph John Biggs
wrote some of his remembrances of his father James and said he was the son
of John Biggs of Edgecombe County that died in 1789. I have seen it written
lots of places that James, son of John of Edgecome, died in Robeson Co., but
it's not true.

>Dear Mr. Mercer,
>
>Thank YOU very very much for your recent letter and the MERCER-BIGGS
genealogical information that YOU
> sent to me.
>
>Mrs. Kate Biggs of Lumberton, North Carolina, and I have been exchanging
Biggs information for several
>years. The last time I had a letter from her she was not sure that her
James Biggs o£ Robeson County, N.C.
>was the son o£ the John Biggs that made his will in Edgecombe County, N. C.
>
>Miss Barbara West told me that the John Biggs who made his will in
Edgeconib Co. N. C. (1789) married
>BETHIAH MERCER. I assume that this bit of data came frorn you. Where
could I find proof of this marriage?
>I certainly feel that this John and Bethiah Bigg are my direct ancestors
through their son, TULLY BIGGS, that
>John named in the will.
>
>All the records in Scott County, Mississippi were not burned during the War
Between the States. Our senior
>Senator, James 0. Zastland, is the great-grandson of the Chancery Clerk of
Scott County at that time, and he
>had the good judgement to take some of the records home with him. We have
many old records. I do quite a
>business as a professional researcher in these records. I'd be more than
happy to help you in any way that I
>could with your Scott County records in exchange for Biggs material. Is
that a deal? Let me know what you
>want and I'll go to work the next time I have a few minutes in the
courthouse. This is election year in
>Mississippi, and the clerks are more than helpful!
>
>I had most of the information that you sent. However, the bits that I did
not have added to my ideas about
>the CRAVEN - CURRITUCK Biggs families. Do you have access to marriage
records for these N.C. counties?
> We need some marriage records.
>
>I know that John Biggs' (of Edgecombe Co. N. C.) son - TULLY BIGGS moved to
Warren-Jefferson
>County, Georgia area and lived on Joe1s Creek from about l796-l805. I
THINK his wife was Mary Wiggins.
>Family tradition is that our ancestor's mother was Mary Wiggins, and that
she lived with her son,
>Wiggins Biggs, in Hinds County, Miss. Three boys - James Biggs (my
great-great-great-grandfather), Wiggins
>Biggs, and John Biggs moved to Mississippi about 1820. We think that these
three were all sons of Tully
>Biggs . Of course, we need to prove this. I want a marriage record for
Tully Biggs, and I think I'll find
>it in North Carolina. The Edgecomb County records suffered fires, but I
think he might have married before
>the family moved there.
>
>If you have any more in£ormation on the Biggs family, I would certainly
like to see it. Let me know if you
>need records from Scott County on your Mercer lineage.
