Hi ~~ After hearing about the artistic talents of the various Bisset(t)s;
it would appear that I come from a line of 'artistically challenged'
Bissett folk.
The only thing that I can add from this end is that my great grandfather,
Capt. Stephen Bissett, built ships models after coming ashore. He would be
commissioned by various banks to build them and was also known for his
'ships in a bottle'. Sadly to say, I don't know the existence of any of them.
No singers, no one accomplished on a musical instrument, no photographers.
The trait that seems to be prevalent in this Bissett branch is the affinity
for animals. Lots of dog, rabbit and cat breeders. Everyone owns pets -
Bissett uncles, aunts, cousins included. Right now I'm at an all time low
of one dog and one cat.
For over 20 years I've bred, trained, shown Bernese Mountain Dogs. Right
now I'm the President of the New England BMDC which I started about 15
years ago and it has over 500 members. I am also the Chair for the Draft
Work Committee (and judge) for the National Bernese Mountain Dog Club.
Draft work is pulling carts as Berners were bred in Switzerland to pull the
milk carts. I've shown and trained dogs in breed, obedience through
utility, draft work, tracking and agility. Have had numerous Therapy Dogs
and was a tester for Therapy Dogs International.
We are having a National Specialty (just Berners) in Rhode Island the last
week in April/first week in May. Over 600 rooms are booked and we expect
upwards of 1000 Berners from all over the world. Yes, folks are even
flying in from Australian, New Zealand, England, Canada, Switzerland,
Norway, Germany and Japan. The show goes on for 5 days. Air Switzerland
even threw in two free trips to Switzerland to be raffled off during the
show. We hosted this show about 12 years ago and had it in Stowe, VT.
Just to give you idea of the size of this thing, we raised $7,000 for
hospitality.
My kennel name is Nord Staaten which is slang German for 'Yankee'. Now
would appear that I should have been in Scottish Deerhouds with a kennel
name of Lessendrum. Right now I have a 5 pound Affenphencher so I can
always add the Deerhound.
I know there is at least one other 'dog person' out there! <g>
