Greetings, All,
I learned several years ago that Bessette is one of the spelling variations
of Bisset/Bissett -- does anyone on this list know which part of the world
the Bessette surname variation originated and how long ago? In Black's
Surnames of Scotland, there is a Beset listest as a spelling variation as
far back as 1362.
Bessette with its accent on the second syllable is pronounced in the same
way that some I have met have pronounced Bissett and Bisset, although in
our family (primarily in Washington, DC area & Fife, Scotland), we have
pronounced our Bisset surname with the accent on the first syllable for at
least the past five generations.
Regardless of whether or not the Bessette family of Connecticut which has
been on global and American national news this past weekend is directly
related to any of the Bisset/t lines represented by members of this list,
my condolences go out to them in the loss of their two daughters, Carolyn
and Lauren, as well as to the Kennedy family for the loss of John F.
Kennedy, Jr. in the airplane crash in the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's
Vineyard, MA on Friday night.
Regards,
Selena
