Since you had unused record numbers, you must have deleted some people at
various times, as everyone does. If you had deleted someone's spouse, but
did not delete the LINK to the spouse, then you can have a marriage record
for the person, and it would point to "unknown" for a spouse. If the
person had children, and you wanted the children to still be connected to
the person, then the marriage record would still have a use. If there are
no children, then the marriage record is extraneous.
It could be that when you used the split routine to backup the complete
database, these useless marriage records were left out, since they served
no purpose.
